The move toward IT-OT convergence has been underway for years, but cybersecurity continues to be an obstacle. While they may work together, OT teams have their own set of tools and are industry-focused. Their IT counterparts have a cross-industry view of the security landscape.

In a panel discussion in advance of the CS4CA Europe London Conference (Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, 2025), three panelists – Marcin Szczepanik, head of information security at Electricity North West Ltd., Claudio Sangaletti, OT Security leader at Medmix and Trish McGill, chief cyber security strategist at a global manufacturing firm – emphasized the human element of convergence.

“If our teams aren’t cooperating, then convergence is just a buzzword,” McGill said. “If you look at current cyberthreats, they aren’t waiting for any kind of harmony. They exploit any fragmentation including human fragmentation.”

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Szczepanik, Sangaletti and McGill discussed:

  • How attackers exploit the gaps between OT and IT teams;
  • How understanding differing priorities can help foster collaboration among teams;
  • Why working together doesn’t mean integration of teams or tools.
